Screencastify "failed to start recording"

If you receive the error "Failed to start recording" when initiating a recording, something is blocking Screencastify from starting up.

To fix this problem, we recommend the following actions:

  1. Restart your Chrome browser and try again
  2. Restart your computer and try again
  3. Uninstall and reinstall Screencastify (WARNING: if you save your recordings locally and not to your Google Drive, they will be permanently deleted when you uninstall Screencastify. Export them first.)

NOTE

current Chrome bug prevents DESKTOP recordings if you choose to record only the Chrome application. As a workaround, record your "Entire Desktop" or use a TAB recording until this is fixed in Chrome.


If you have followed the above steps and still receive the "Failed to start recording" error, submit your logs to customer support. Please indicate that you've already tried the solutions above and provide as much detail as possible.
