Export your recording

All Screencastify users can export their recordings as a .webm file. Our Premium subscribers have the additional options of exporting their recordings as an .mp4 or animated gif.

Export as a .webm file

WHAT IS A .WEBM FILE?

A WebM file is an open source, high quality video format. WebM videos are compatible with most major browsers as well as with some video players like VLC

  1. From the Video Page, click the export-icon icon
  2. Click "Save Video to Disk"
  3. Your recording will automatically begin downloading as a .webm file

Export as an .mp4 (Premium only)

  1. From the Video Page, click the export-icon icon
  2. Click Export as MP4
  3. You'll be presented with the option to convert your video to a fixed frame rate of your choice (Screencastify dynamically changes frame rate during a recording depending on available memory). Most users can ignore this, but some third party editing and production programs require videos with fixed frame rates.
  4. Click EXPORT MP4. You'll be taken to Your Recordings library where your video will be processed.
  5. When it's finished processing, a SAVE TO DISK button will appear. Click that to download your .mp4 video.

Export as an animated .GIF (Premium only)

NOTE

The GIF format is meant for short, simple animations. Screencastify may fail to export a long, high quality recording as a GIF.

As a rule of thumb, the maximum duration for animated .GIF exports are:

  • 3 minutes for a 300 x 300 px recording
  • 58 seconds for a 640 × 480 px recording
  • 19 seconds for a 1280 × 720 px recording
  • 8 seconds for a 1920 × 1080 px recording
  1. From the Video Page, click the export-icon icon
  2. Click Export animated GIF
  3. You'll have an option to adjust the dimensions of your .gif
  4. Click EXPORT GIF. You'll be taken to Your Recordings library where your video will be processed.
  5. When it's finished processing, a SAVE TO DISK button will appear. Click that to download your animated .GIF.

TIP

Animated .GIFs are a great way to make emails, websites and other online materials more engaging and informative. We use them all the time! Plus, because they don't have audio, they're often relatively small files.
